What about more green investment and support for the self-employed and excluded?

By Richard Dickson

Kenilworth & Southam's Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesperson Cllr Richard Dickson responded this week to the new financial measures introduced by the Conservative government:

"I welcome the fact that some people will be helped by the measures announced this week by the government. However, sadly, many people have already lost their jobs because of the huge economic impact of our government's response to COVID19 in our country and these new measure cannot hife the awful redundancies announced this week by several major retailers.

Furthermore, it remains very unclear how the country will pay for the cost of furlough scheme and these new measures. It should not be the most vulnerable who should pay. The government's approach seems to be 'spend, spend, spend' without telling us how the country is going to 'pay, pay, pay' and who in particular will have to pay for the costs of these measures.

As a Liberal Democrat I would have preferred to see our future prosperity based on:

1) more investment in the green economy, especially in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects;
2) more support for the self-employed, and
3) more help for 'excluded' workers e.g. freelancers."
