Climate Change
Climate change is the biggest threat to human existence. We urgently need to limit temperature rises to 1.5°C or we will face irreversible climate change which will cause catastrophic land loss and make parts of our planet inhabitable.
Liberal Democrats are committed to achieving net zero by 2045 at the latest.
We understand that our whole economy needs to change and, if done successfully, this will create tens of thousands of jobs while cutting emissions and ensuring that the UK becomes a world leader in moving to net zero.
Drastically increasing renewables is a key priority. The Lib Dems were responsible for tripling renewable energy production in government when our party leader, Ed Davey, was Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. We believe that at least 90% of the UK’s energy supply should come from genuinely renewable sources by 2030.
Upgrading homes – free for those on low incomes – should be a priority, not only to reduce emissions, but also to cut the cost of bills and reliance on gas.
It’s vital to ensure that no-one is left behind in the transition. We will establish citizens’ assemblies to give people real involvement in the decisions needed to tackle climate change and local authorities should also have more powers to make decisions on cutting local emissions.
