UPHOLDING STANDARDS IN PUBLIC LIFE
She said:
"I was disappointed to learn that Sir Jeremy Wright, the MP for Kenilworth and Southam, did not support the unanimous verdict of the House of Commons Committee of Privileges after they concluded that the disgraced former prime minister had misled Parliament.
Upholding high standards in public office is an absolute prerequisite for any elected representative. When an MP calls a committee of his peers a ‘kangaroo court’ and our local MP fails to stand up for our democratic institutions, then we are being failed by those who have the onerous responsibility of representing us.
Standards in public office are important because they help to ensure that those who hold public office act in a way that is fair, ethical, and transparent.
When people believe that those in public office are acting in their best interests, they are more likely to trust the government and participate in the political process. That is at the core of our democracy and why it is important to hold those who breach codes of conduct or ignore the Nolan Principles to account.
For Sir Jeremy to abstain on Monday evening was a sign of weakness. At a time when we face huge cost of living challenges, escalating mortgages and our NHS in crisis, the residents of Kenilworth and Southam deserve a commitment to protect our democratic institutions."
